Today’s Prayer: Thomas Edison…who we all know invented the light bulb and many other useful products that we are dependent on today. It has to be said he was a very smart and intelligent man. He wrote in 1920s
, “We don’t know the millionth part of one percent about anything.” That’s quite a statement coming from a man who knew quite a lot and many things. Anyway, that was his perspective and I think it could be true about our knowledge of prayer. We know so very little about prayer, but you don’t have to know very much about prayer to utilize and benefit from it. You may not know much about electricity…how it works to produce light in your house but you use it. You don’t have to know anything about it to turn on the light switch. I think there is so much about prayer that we don’t know. We are going to be enlightened one day about the power, majesty, authority and glory of our prayer life but what we don’t know shouldn’t prevent us from turning the switch that leads us into the heavenly’s in our prayer life. We don’t see in real time the impact prayer has on God…yet we know it does. We don’t see His immediate reaction when we pray but we know He reacts and we don’t know precisely what is being set in motion by God when we pray. Daniel was enlightened one day about the influence of his time of prayer and fasting; [Daniel 10:12] “Then the angel said to me, "Do not fear, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard; and I have come because of your words.” Daniel had no idea until the angel told him. There is so much going on because of our prayer that we don’t know about, can’t know about because we can’t see into the unseen realm. What we do know is that God is taking action. He is answering prayer His way in His own time, as He sees fit. You don’t have to know the chemical composition of water for it to quench your thirst. God’s ways are so far above and beyond our ways; [Job 9:10] “He does great things past finding out, Yes, wonders without number.” We don’t have to fully grasp all the dynamics connected with prayer in order for it to move heaven and earth, to satisfy your spiritual thirst and hunger. ‘We don’t know a millionth part of one percent about anything?’ That could be true about our knowledge of prayer and if it is we are in for a real and perhaps eternal education about the glory and majesty of prayer. Maybe Thomas Edison was more accurate than he understood. For a very smart man, I think he stumbled on to something that is worth meditating on as we pray today.
